Seismic Bracing For The Salt Lake City International Airport
VIE has been continuously involved in the $4.5 billion Salt Lake City International Airport Terminal Replacement Project since 2019, providing seismic bracing design, equipment anchorage design, and construction support services.
VIE has developed seismic design and provided bracing services to 8 different mechanical and electrical contractors on this project during this timeframe. Services have been provided for 4 phases of the terminal replacement project and the parking structure. Throughout the course of this project, VIE has provided seismic bracing design for attachment to concrete, steel, floor systems, structural frames, structural walls, interior steel stud partition walls, concrete walls, and beyond. The total number of bracing installed to date exceeds 5000 brace locations.
In addition to that, VIE has designed seismic anchorage for complex mechanical and electrical equipment in all phases of this project. The first phases of VIE’s design, from 2019-2020, were tested during the March 2020 earthquake with excellent performance that resulted in no downtime for facilities during this earthquake.
VIE also designed flexible connections for utility systems that accommodate up to 14 inches of movement across seismic joints in the structures at the facility. During all this work, VIE established a reputation as a problem-solving firm, coming up with unique and effective solutions in complex situations, especially in places where facilities required custom bracing.
