Moss Courthouse Historic Renovation
The Frank E. Moss U.S. Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City is currently undergoing a $100 million dollar renovation. This is a historic landmark, originally constructed between 1902 and 1905, and the oldest building in the Salt Lake City Exchange Place Historic District. It underwent major expansions in 1912 and 1932, but its unreinforced masonry and close proximity to the Wasatch fault made further renovations to update it to current standards necessary. This includes seismic retrofit.
VIE is doing seismic design on all new electrical systems going into the Moss Courthouse Historic Renovation. This is a complicated building because the old floor slabs are very weak compared to modern slabs for concrete strength, by a factor of 10 or less, which presents unique challenges.
The pictures above depict the way it looks now with old slabs exposed. VIE is developing innovative procedures to attach old slabs and beams in a reasonable way for seismic bracing.
